The Gift of Christmas: God and Sinners Reconciled
Colossians 1:19-23/ Pastor Shay

There are always two basic questions about the event Christmas declares. The first question is … How did the Son of God come to earth? The second question is … Why did the Son of God come to earth? The event, the claim of Christmas, is the Son of God, a divine personage, came to earth. The first question is how did he come to earth. The answer the Christian faith has given over the centuries is incarnation. God became physical. The second question is why did the Son of God come to earth, why did he become physical. The answer is reconciliation. How he came … incarnation; why he came … reconciliation.“Hark! The Herald Angels Sing,” the famous carol we’ll sing at the end, puts it all together very well. Charles Wesley, who wrote it, saw in the Christmas story the angels sing the reason the Son of God came to earth is for peace on earth. Properly translated, what they sang was “Peace on earth toward those upon whom God’s grace and favor rests.” That’s the reason why Charles Wesley put it so beautifully. He said,

Peace on earth, and mercy mild,

God and sinners reconciled!

Josh & Meghan Baylor

Though Christianity once prospered throughout Europe, today very few people know Jesus Christ as more than a curse word and new gospel-centered churches are needed desperately. Josh and Meghan Baylor are missionaries in Europe that we support through our Cooperative Program missions support system. Your faithful and abundant giving helps gospel missionaries like the Baylors stay on the field.  Today let's pray for Josh and Meghan as they enlist and train others, first as disciples of Christ and then as leaders in kingdom work.

Ideas to Help your family be outward focus over Christmas Break

1.      Volunteer for a community service organization in the area

2.      Celebrate another culture with a meal and discuss the gospel work happening in that culture.

3.      Make a meal or a dessert for someone in your neighborhood.

4.      Each family member can give one gift that they received to someone less fortunate. Or go through your current toy/clothes to donate things that are in good condition.

5.      Go to www.imb.org/pray/ and spend time as a family praying for the missionary prayer requests listed there.  Take up a family offering and give to missions online at give.imb.org
