PASSING THE PEACE

CALL TO WORSHIP

One: Loving Mother,

who with perfect timing

knows when to push; to nudge; to shove;

and when to wait,

even through the longing for change,

All: Grant us the courage to name you;

and the grace of your timing.

One: Brother Christ,

who feeds us at the table of love

with the heavenly feast too rich for us to imagine

and in whose death our own wounds find resurrection,

All: Show us the Way to our place at the table

that we may know the delight

of your divine banquet that has no end.

One: Lady Wisdom,

who nurtures and wills our growing,

whose still, small voice lives inside us,

and large upon wind and flame,

All: Lead us in your wild dance,

that we may tread the unfamiliar paths

singing gladly;

And find fulfillment for the dreams

that you have dreamed for us.

OPENING SONG - What a Fellowship

CALL TO CONFESSION - LECTOR

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

All: God the Holy Trinity, your image calls us into community. Your Spirit of justice offers forgiveness and reconciliation to everyone, but we confess, it is not always our choice. In Jesus, you welcomed the poor and despised, but we confess, to live by these values seems foolish. Great Artist, the marvelous diversity of your Creation calls us to wildly dance across the boundaries our culture erects between peoples, but we confess, fear keeps us in cages. Help us live by your wisdom. Set us free from all that prevents us from sitting at the table of love. Help us to join the divine dance. Amen.

The Word

SCRIPTURE READING: 2 Corinthians 12:2-10

I know a person in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven—whether in the body or out of the body I do not know; God knows. And I know that such a person—whether in the body or out of the body I do not know; God knows— was caught up into Paradise and heard things that are not to be told, that no mortal is permitted to repeat. On behalf of such a one I will boast, but on my own behalf I will not boast, except of my weaknesses. But if I wish to boast, I will not be a fool, for I will be speaking the truth. But I refrain from it, so that no one may think better of me than what is seen in me or heard from me, even considering the exceptional character of the revelations. Therefore, to keep me from being too elated, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me, to keep me from being too elated. Three times I appealed to the Lord about this, that it would leave me, but he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.” So, I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. Therefore I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities for the sake of Christ; for whenever I am weak, then I am strong.
